Phoebe Cirio, MSW, LCSW will present on Sexuality and Young Women.

The presentation is a paper-in-progress looking at the pressures on young women to comply with norms for the expression of their sexuality, that are  established by men. Young women are subjected to pressures to appear “hot,” and “hotness” is a standard defined by men, and to which young women are subjected.  The paper will look at some of the responses being developed by women to these pressures. Among the responses will be the HBO program Girls,  written, and starred in by Lena Dunham, and the Amazon Prime program Transparent where the character of Alison,  portrayed by Gaby Hoffman, examines the interface between her self-expression, her expression of her femaleness, sexual identity, and Jewish identity. Those attending this program could watch episodes of either of these shows to be familiar with the characters and performances.
