Description

Ignoring race during therapy is unethical but easy to do! According to Margaret Clausen in her 2015 article “Whiteness Matters: Exploring White Privilege, Color Blindness and Racism in Psychotherapy, guilt and shame are unconsciously held aspects of white racial identity and often serve as blocks to productive conversation. These create blindspots. The social unrest of 2020 combined with the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on the black community further highlight the need for mental health providers and educators, to be equipped with multicultural awareness and skills. The participants will learn how white fragility can impact therapists and clients and how to recognize it when it occurs. During this session participants will explore their own discomfort around the topic of race and practice introducing the topic. 3 Continuing Education Hours This meets the requirement for Ethics training. *This is a recording of our live virtual event that occurred on May 21, 2022.
